Please note that beginning October 24, 2021, callers using landlines and cellphones must dial 10 digits (area code + telephone number) for all local calls. In Wisconsin, this includes everyone in the 262, 414, 920, and 608 area codes. On and after this date, local calls dialed with only seven digits may not be completed, and a recording will inform you that your call cannot be completed as dialed. You must hang up and dial again using the 10-digit number. In all, 80+ area codes in three dozen states, including most of Wisconsin, will be affected by the change.
The FCC has previously announced this transition as part of the establishment of 988 as a new, nationwide crisis hotline number that connects individuals to suicide prevention and mental health crisis counselors. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can still be reached by dialing 1-800-273-TALK (8255) even after the 988 code is in effect (July 2022).
